Pirelli Tyres For 2011 Season
Pirelli has been names the sole tyres provider for the Formula 1 2011 season for the next 3 years.
This announcement came on Wednesday by the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) when last year Bridgestone declared their plans of not offering tyres for the next season after 2010 which then invited alot of tyre providers to spring into action for F1 deal.
Pirelli has been selected as the single tyre supplier for the FIA Formula One World Championship for a period of three years, commencing in 2011, the sole supplier will undertake to strictly respect the sporting and technical regulations implemented by the FIA.
Pirelli last supplied tyres for Formula 1 in 1991 and has 44 grand prix winning cars under its belt. Althought there has been more than a decade since Pirelli has been into Formula 1 action, let see if they can match Bridgestone or push the development boundaries which Bridgestone lacked in the last two seasons, and many teams complained about tyres issues.
The Michilen Deal:
As much as most of the Formula 1 fans have heard about the Michilen being really good with the their tyres and expected a return from them but lately the news has come that Michilen never applied for the next season tyres, saying they needed competition from other tyre manufacturer providing tyres for Formula 1 and will be in if there is a tyre war. FIA had no plan of considering 2 tyre suppliers for 2011 season.
It was reported earlier that Michilen was losing the bid to win the contract but French sports daily L’Equipre reported as boss Nick Shorrock clarified:
We were asked whether we were ready to supply tyres with the regulations of 2010, in the context of the current regulations remaining in force in 2011. We had discussions with the authorities of F1. There were proposals to improve the show, to have a positive impact on the environment while controlling the costs, and of course where there is a competition of manufacturers. But the regulations did not change
While on the other hand Pirelli has agreed to suppy tyres for 2011 season with the same regulation of 2010 and also confirmed that it will supply full wet tyres, an intermediate and four dry weather tyres.
